The Wadsworth Center (Albany, New York) recently evaluated Redbud NA1 for its ability to extract viral RNA from clinical samples and viral isolates. Results were presented in Griesemer et al., “Initial Evaluation of a Compact Automated Extraction System for Viral RNA Detection,” at the American Society for Microbiology’s 2024 Clinical Virology Symposium in Long Beach, CA.
Highlights from the application note:
- Redbud NA1 was small enough to fit inside the biosafety cabinet in the Virology department’s biosafety-level 3 lab
- Redbud NA1 Viral RNA Purification demonstrated viral nucleic acid recovery for RSVA and SARS-CoV-2
- Purifications are highly linear (r2=99%) with consistent yield (<2% CV)
- Extracted nucleic acids are suitable for whole- genome amplicon sequencing, with excellent coverage (>99%)
- Redbud NA1’s simplified workflow is convenient for laboratorians in public health departments
